Gallery: Powder River Coal
I just returned from 2 days of flying around the giant strip mines that stretch for 50 miles through the Powder River Basin near Gillette, Wyoming.
Strangely, this is a landscape in which the aerial view cannot fully give you a sense of scale; once you get high enough to capture an entire mine, familiar objects like normal vehicles are too small to identify. The equipment that you can see is freakishly large, and exists in no other habitat but these mines.
